About MCMS
The Mecklenburg County Medical Society, located in Charlotte, North Carolina is a nonprofit professional society of more than 1,300 physician members. The MCMS is committed to the profession of medicine and to the people it serves.
The MCMS is involved in numerous public services and community activities to provide education, awareness and access to various community health resources and health education. Through MCMS, members are given the opportunity to serve both the medical and lay communities and maintain a vital connection to each other.

MCMS is a physician-led organization with more than 100 years’ experience in making a difference in the health of our community.
Past MCMS Initiatives
Bioethics Resource Group –Bioethics Resource Group – Under the leadership of George Barrett, MD (a past president), and other like-minded individuals, the Bioethics Committee was organized in 1984 and incorporated as the Bioethics Resource Group (BRG) in 1985. The BRG ceased to exist in 2008.
UNCC Ethics Chair - The Medical Society led a fundraising drive to endow the MCMS Distinguished Professorship in Health Care Ethics at UNCC.
Smith Arthritis Fund—Carolyn Kirkpatrick Smith established the Smith Arthritis Fund in 1979 for arthritis research. The fund supports research projects related to the needs of patients suffering from rheumatologic diseases. Grants continue to be awarded each year.
Physicians Reach Out (now with Care Ring) – Empowering individuals with limited resources to establish and maintain good health
Hospitality House of Charlotte - creates a community for patients connecting to vital medical care.
MedAssist of Mecklenburg (now NC MedAssist) – Seeks to ensure that no eligible person in North Carolina has to choose between purchasing food or their needed medication.
Teen Health Connection – Improves the health of adolescents by providing adolescent medicine and behavioral health services, education, advocacy, leadership development, and research through connections among adolescents, parents, and the community.
The Society serves all physicians and physician assistants who seek to have a forum for impactful collaborations and the implementation of programs addressing the healthcare needs for our region.
Membership provides unique opportunities for networking among physicians and physician assistants, allowing for a unified voice for healthcare policy and advocacy on behalf of all Mecklenburg County residents.
We are an accessible, seamless organization where one can work with colleagues to address healthcare concerns and issues.
