Smith Arthritis Fund

Purpose

The purpose of the Smith Arthritis Fund is to support projects that benefit, either directly or indirectly, individuals with musculoskeletal diseases. Funding may be awarded for research, patient education, community-based programs, and other initiatives that advance the prevention, treatment, or understanding of arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions.

History

In 1976, Carolyn Kirkpatrick Smith established a charitable bequest of $41,500 to support arthritis research. In 1979, the Mecklenburg County Medical Society (MCMS) agreed to administer the Smith Arthritis Fund.

Grant Committee Review

The Grant applications are reviewed by a committee of three physicians appointed by the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. The committee consists of: Sports Medicine Physician, Rheumatologist, and Orthopedic Surgeon.

The committee evaluates each proposal based on its scientific and educational merit, potential impact on individuals with musculoskeletal diseases, and alignment with the mission of the Smith Arthritis Fund.
